Quick Summary
•
The program is aimed at enhancing the City’s cleanliness and overall appearance.
•
Various organizations or companies volunteer to adopt-a-street or section of street for a one (1) year period during which they will pick-up and remove litter at least once every two (2) months.
•
The program focuses on the City’s heavily traveled main arterial streets; however, other streets may be added as participation increases.
•
Participation allows the organizations to publicly demonstrate their concern of and dedication toward maintaining the City’s overall appearance, cleanliness and attractiveness to the citizens and visitors.
•
An official Adopt-A-Street sign with the organization’s name is placed at each end of the respective street or section of street after the organization has performed two (2) litter pick-ups. The sign serves as recognition to passing motorists of the organization’s dedication to the community.
•
The City of Oak Ridge provides trash bags, gloves, safety vests, and warning signs to the groups to use during each litter pick-up event.
•
The volunteers fill the trash bags with litter, then places them on the shoulder of the roadway where City crews will remove them the following day.
•
The program supplements litter pick-up efforts conducted by the City’s Public Works Department itself, further aiding efforts to maintain the City’s cleanliness.
